Best planting day this week is Thursday
Well,
neighbors, we found last weekend here in central Kentucky at least that
statistics are just that – statistics. This time last week we were saying the
“statistical” danger of frost was in the past and then the bottom dropped out
of the temperatures – at least the “bottom” for this time of year. I hope
nothing you had planted was damaged if it did indeed frost at your place. And
if tender plants were damaged or killed, thankfully there’s time to replant.
Of course,
if you are somewhere that wasn’t impacted at all then consider yourself
blessed.
As an added
“curse” to the cold snap, the ground temperature will be lowered just a little
because of the cool, cloudy days and the even cooler nights with the cloud
cover persisting and temperatures in the 50s. But we shall buck it up and press
on, knowing better days are ahead.
On the heels
of the cold snap comes this week with three Ember Days! If it’s dry enough for
you to be doing any planting and you are following the phases of the moon and
signs of the zodiac, here’s this week’s information. Just don’t do any planting on what’s left of today (Wednesday), Friday
and/or Saturday; those are the Ember Days. In the midst of this
conflagration comes Thursday, an outstanding day for any above-ground producers
with the moon in the light phase and the sign in Scorpio (the secrets), one of
the four most fertile signs for planting.
Moon and signs
The moon is in the light phase now and will
remain there until the next full moon at 5:14 p.m. EDT Saturday, May 21 when
the full moon comes to rule until the next new moon on June 4 at 11 p.m.
A look at the signs reveals, as I just mentioned above, there
are three Ember Days this week – today (Wednesday), Friday and Saturday when no
planting should occur no matter what the phase or the sign.
As a
reminder, the absolute best planting day for above-ground producers will be
Thursday while the moon remains in the light phase and the sign is in Scorpio.
If the ground is dry enough, this is a perfect day for any and all above-ground
producers and we’ll hope the frost is in fact over.
A series of
so-so days begins Saturday and continues through May 27. In order they are
Sagittarius (thighs, three days); Capricorn (knees, two); and Aquarius (legs,
two days). These aren’t the most fertile days but not destructive either, just
so-so. And at the beginning of the period the moon moves to the dark phase at
5:14 p.m. on Saturday, which thankfully is the last Ember Day.
The fertile
sign Pisces (the feet) then comes to rule May 28-29 with the moon in the dark
phase. On either of these days you may plant any below-ground producers.
Wrapping up
the month while we are here, the month ends with the killing sign Aries (the
head) ruling May 30-31. Just like on an Ember Day, no planting should occur.
And just like that five months of 2016 is in the books!
Making changes
The period
from May 22-29 will be a great stretch for making changes like stopping bad
habits, starting good ones, weaning small children or animals, scheduling
elective surgery – anything that requires making a change. The moon will be in
the dark phase then and the signs going out of the body beyond anything that
functions – thighs through feet. Just be underway by May 30-31 when the moon
moves back to the head.
